An undergraded coin if I ever saw one! I appreciate the scrutinous grading, and acknowledge the toning may not be spectacular but I think it gives this coin substance! Check out the die crack on the reverse from the bottom bands to the right down through the I in DIME! There are scratches in the plastic of the holder mostly on the back across the upper middle, such is life, and even more so with older holders!

I think I was fortunate enough to acquire this example largely due to the fact it was attributed on the label not by the FS or CONECA designation but as VP-002, NGC’s proprietary grading designation for particular varieties and, accordingly, one of the rarest RPMs for the series was overlooked! I only discovered it when I happened to see another listing of another VP coin on eBay and scrolled past it when the thought occurred that if I’d done that because I didn’t want to go through the hassle of decoding yet another unintuitive system of letters and numbers, then so probably did everyone else! Figure it out I did, and went through my cherrypicker’s guide adding the VP designations when applicable. I would say it paid off!

In a stroke of fabulous luck, almost the entirety of the contact marks on this coin have occurred on the obverse! Poor Franklin Delano. The reverse toning looks like it might have been in contact with paper at the end of a coin roll, with the little sans-serif S peeking out from the gap between two folds of the paper. The toning shows much more color under magnification/light, especially DIME on the reverse. Die scratches on the obverse on Roosevelt’s neck behind his ear are another much more minor hallmark of this iconic variety for the Roosevelt dime series!

Double the variety on this coin! This variety is not too much trouble to find, with detailed enough photographs! Not the flashiest but fun to identify in a well-struck coin with nice toning. Chances are if you cherrypick the 1946-S with some frequency you will wind up with one of these in your collection, so take your time and wait for the nice ones!
