While the toning reaches the rim everywhere else, a faint ring along the edge around 3 and 4 o’clock is blast white, as if it were in physical contact with something from which it was removed. Suffice to say the pattern of toning suggests to me it might have sat in an album at one point in time. This is hilarious that perhaps THE MOST naked-eye-visible variety of the series was put into someone’s album in a way so as to perfectly obscure just the massive protrusion under the 4 in the date! What a surprise for whoever pulled it out of there!

A tall textured die chip on Roosevelt’s upper lip becomes a moustache and transforms the face of the President’s bust into one bearing a most unfortunate resemblance to an Austrian painter. I love the chaotic flow of the electric blue album toning.

The late die state of the obverse being requisite for this variety, its pairing with a fresher, sharper reverse die allows this example to achieve the Full Torch designation from NGC. What a fun example of this iconic variety for the series, displaying absolutely no trace of the designer’s initials and handsome obverse toning in shades of olive green and golden brown.
